Interests
- Communicating concepts and ideas: from explaining usage of a markup language for document preparation to unconsciously teaching patterns to someone playing a game, how can we effectively communicate an idea to someone else? What makes concepts “sticky” or memorable and others immediately forgettable? How can we leverage our brains’ internal representation of concepts to make communicating ideas easier and faster?
- Novel (and frivolous) combinations of existing ideas: several people have tried to automate HQ Trivia, OCR libraries are freely available, and the Android SDK is free and well-documented, but (to my knowledge) nobody has combined them into an automated HQ Trivia app. There are almost a hundred thousand Google results for “GroupMe bot” and eleven million results for “hangman online” but only five thousand results for “hangman Groupme bot” (and my GitHub repo and my writeup of the project are the first two results). Being interdisciplinary and drawing on a wide breadth of knowledge can be surprisingly rewarding. Not to mention fun!
- Streamlining workflows and processes to help people work more effectively: the apocryphal saying of “choose a lazy person to do a hard job because that person will find an easy way to do it” has some merit. (The trick, of course, is to be lazy in all the right ways while being uncommonly industrious in other ways.) Some things just lend themselves to automation and I am interested in various ways of doing so, whether by making a book tracking app to log what books I read or writing a bot to automatically make fun of my friends. More professionally, throughout my career I’ve worked on helpful infrastructure projects, such as machine learning classifiers, ETL scripts, data pipelines, data validation microservices, and much more.
